Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is now part of just about every military and law enforcement hand to hand training curriculum. It is incredibly effective at utilizing leverage and pain compliance so that a smaller person can control and neutralize a much larger and stronger opponent. Sometimes a pain compliance technique may not be effective in a self defense situation. When this happens the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner just follows through and either chokes the guy out. Or they move the other guys joint past its normal range of motion either snapping a bone like a twig or tearing a joint out of it's socket. CHOKE SNAP OR BREAK! With those kind of outcomes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has to be looked at as a viable contender for a real world self defense system. In addition to having a website devoted to their bricks and mortar training facility and the Gracie Combatives DVD's website, they have an absolutely outstanding online self defense training site. It is located at www.gracieuniversity.com and is absolutely first class. The quality of video instruction, online support, forum and supplementary downloadable print material is fantastic. Instead of a monthly fee you can choose to complete the Gracie Combatives curriculum online via two different payment methods. First you can pay $144.00 USD and have access to the entire Gracie Combatives course immediately. This includes everything that is on the Gracie Combatives DVD set but it is online and includes the online moderated forum, where you can ask questions and review other student and instructor posts. This cost is more expensive than purchasing the Gracie Combatives DVD set however you have much more value at your finger tips through the online program. There is the student chat room, an "Ask The Gracies" feature and accompanying each lesson is a detailed breakdown in PDF format so that if you are practicing in an area without an internet connection you have the information right at your fingertips. There is online testing and once you have tested and proved yourself profficient in all of the Gracie Combatives lessons you can take the Blue Belt Qualification Test and earn an online Gracie Jiu Jitsue belt ranking. And if you want to continue and learn more advanced online Gracie Jiu Jitsu training there are online purple, brown and black belt lessons in the making. They have broken down the online self defense training through a unique internet browser which is kind of a heads up display for navigating through your lessons. The training is first class and they take special care to talk you through even the most subtle of moves. Both Ryron and Rener Gracie provide great technical value but also demonstrate that they are truly passionate and enjoy what they teach. Training is broken down for their proprietary learning method by using what is called "Technical Slices", "Reflex Development Drills" and "Fight Simulation Drills". These are all used to accelerate your learning and so that in a high stress situation their training becomes second nature. The second option for payments for this is by purchasing each course component as you need on a individual basis. The cost is $8.00 per module. By enrolling for the online training and paying all at once the cost works out to $4.00 per module. So you are better off enrolling for the whole course than purchasing individually. *** Here is what I really liked about Gracie University *** When you enroll and it doesn't matter if you purchase a course here and there or if you purchase the entire Gracie Combatives all upfront, your access remains forever. There is no expiry date where the courses fall off. Most other online self defense training use a monthly subscription plan and once you stop paying your access is cut off leaving you with nothing! Having this library to refer back to is the icing on the cake. The best feature is the quality of instruction given by Ryron and Rener Gracie. The next best feature is the quality of audio and video which is accompanied by one of the best site navigation systems I have seen for online training. Also there is plenty of free lessons and samples for you to determine if Gracie University is a right fit for you or not. *** Here is what I didn't like *** Because of the unique training navigation display you could not enter a full screen for just the instructional video portion. The whole browser enlarges to fit the whole screen when you hit the view full screen option. This is a very, very, minor issue though! The second issue that I have as a self defense system is that if you are facing multiple attackers, going to the ground usually results in your head being punted around like a soccer ball by the other guys friends. Trust me I have had this happen to me in my younger more foolish years! Regardless since almost all physical encounters end up on the ground at some point you should have zero fear of being on your back and on the ground. The qualifier here is as long as you have a good training partner and work on mastering the techniques taught. The one area of improvement that I would love to see is the ability to download the instructional video onto your portable device such as an i-pod. This way if there is no internet access you can still review visually the training. There is printed material that serves this purpose but there is just something about being able to watch a technique in video along with its explanation. This again is not a big issue at all and is understandable given that if this option were available the lessons would be spread all over the internet via file sharing pirates. Overall I very much liked Gracie University and their online self defense training.
Jean Jacques Machado Online Training Center which I will going forward refer to as JJM is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu online training site. The self defense lessons on the site are very minimal. Jean Jacques is a legend, world champion and world renowned trainer. I did check out this online training in order to have something to compare the Gracie Combatives to. The quality of video, audio and training is all exceptional. Again there is a proprietary training browser for navigating the over 1000 instructional clips. A training outline is set up for beginners to follow along. There is online belt qualification and video submission. Jean Jacques Machado himself shares, exchanges comments and recognizes different online students accomplishments. He is honest, caring and looking to enhance and provide first class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training online. Since this site is predominantly a site devoted to improving sport Jiu Jitsu skills, I will keep my review short since it is more about sport than self defense. *** Here is what I liked *** The interactivity with Jean Jacques Machado, live chat and student forums. I loved the fact that you can purchase iPod and Quicktime downloads for your mobile device even though it is at an additional cost. The proprietary T.A.P. console make learning and navigation easy. With the T.A.P. browser it makes it easy to search for a certain technique. You can even search for gi or no gi techniques! The cost is only $24.99 USD a month and you have access to 1000 plus instructional videos immediately. (This can also be a curse if you do not stick to a learning plan) *** Here is what I didn't like *** For my purposes the site is almost 100% devoted to the sport aspect of Jiu Jitsu. Do not get me wrong a good Jiu Jitsu practioner has such a crazy understanding and feel for the human body that they could turn you into a human pretzel even if they are blindfolded and sedated. I just felt that for me it was not a good fit. However if I were into Mixed Martial Arts and or studying Jiu Jitsu this would be highlighted and saved as a favourite on my internet browser. Maybe in the future I will travel down this road but right now I am looking just strictly at self defense. For someone looking to learn the sport of Jiu Jitsu or the supplement and enhance your current Jiu Jitsu, JJM is definitely golden.
