Which self defense moves are you going to use?

Are you going to use simple and crippling techniques?

Or are you going to jab, front kick, right cross, clinch and takedown?

By the way as a word of warning from the title, if you are going to crush someone's trachea in a bar fight be prepared to serve time for killing the other guy. I am talking about life or death, them or us struggles.

The beauty of real self defense moves are the simplicity in getting the injury, crippling or maiming the other person and allowing you time to exit the scene in one piece.

When you look at martial arts and sport based self defense versus combatives, the following items really stand out above all else.

Sports and martial arts showcase skill, talent and especially physical prowess and conditioning.

They are great to participate in because where else can you go full out kicking, punching and grappling with another human body in a "safe" controlled environment where injuries heal and can usually be treated on the spot.

They are absolutely awesome to watch as a spectator and a superb fight is one where the individuals are evenly matched and can slug it out or toss each other around toe to toe for half an hour.

Hands down the best entertainment on the face of the earth!

Not pretty to watch. The true violence, not the glorified Hollywood stuff, is down right gut wrenching!

You see prison videos of one inmate repeatedly sticking a sharpened tooth brush into another inmates torso over and over again while another inmate holds the victims legs down so he can't escape.

Or you see a woman being stabbed 40-50 times, until her body is drenched with blood from head to toe and her face is puffy and un-recognizeable from all the trauma she has received.

She's left as a piling heap of human flesh and bone on the sidewalk and the only sound from her is blood gurgling in her lungs as she tries to breath while an ambulance arrives. Meanwhile the ex-boyfriend who was the attacker is only fatigued and lying on the concrete only to try and catch his breath.

You get the picture here, violence is not pretty and if you enjoy watching it, you need help! True violent encounters are over in 5 seconds or less! It's true.

Criminals and the unsavoury type of people who view us civilized people as prey, have no training and need no training.

Most do not have any martial arts training.

They do not know any self defense moves or fancy techniques.

They don't do self defense....they are the predators.

If another member of a competing gang confronts another gangs member there are no self defense moves going on by either one of them.

There is no, "If he comes at me like this, I'll pivot and counter by doing this move."

They use the simplest of tools to their advantage to get the upper hand.

That tool is violence and intent.

As crude as it is, it works!

If it didn't there would be no thugs and the civilized part of our society would pound them into submission every time!

True violence is unexpected.

The whole teaching of self defense in a fashion where the instructor says......

"Okay now here is how to defend against an overhead knife attack." (Alfred Hitchcock's Norman Bates type attack)

This is all bogus.

Violence is unexpected.

Now not only do you have the normal flinch reaction, which can save your life.

But now you freeze for that critical fraction of a second.

You identify what type of an attack is coming your way.

Determine what the proper self defense moves are to counter it.

Then by the time you react after that critical fraction of a second the knife plunges down into your flesh.

Now this reminds me of a funny video that you may or may not have seen before!



So the solution for self defense in a true violent confrontation is simple.

Use the same tool right back at them, but use it better and more efficiently.

Take their exposed weak spot and destroy it and then destroy the next one and the next one and so on, until they are not functioning anymore.

It doesn't matter if you use a rock, your fist, the butt of a gun or your foot.

Just get the job done and live to walk home another day.

Simple, but brutally effective self defense moves are completely different than sport and martial arts.

Enough said! So this is where combatives come in.

Originally taught to soldiers in only a day or two.

Then they were sent off and into harms way to get the job done. Some of them to the front line and some of them sent behind enemy lines to put their skills to work.

The systems are so effective and efficient that they could still take out an enemy even if they were wounded from battle, even with only the minimum of training that they received.

Please do not get me wrong.

I believe 110% that martial arts and sports are phenomenal.

Especially when you cross train with both striking and a grappling forms.

They are outstanding and provide the best defense in a school yard or bar fight scenario where the intent is to prove yourself or knock somebody down a peg.

However these situations can very quickly become life or death situations under the wrong circumstances.

For pure defense against life threatening violence I feel that the training in combatives is far superior.
